Unpacking the Book of Hebrews: Chapter 3

In this chapter the writer, because of what he wrote in Chapter 2 (he starts the Chapter off with the word "therefore"), focuses on the Church being faithful because Jesus, the Son, is faithful.

Because the Jews of the time believed that Moses was the greatest and most Godly man ever, the writer explains to them how Jesus, the Son of God is far greater than Moses! And in verses 16-19 he warns us not to rebel against God and wanted to turn back to Egypt (the place of sin) as Israel did when they refused to enter the promised land. Israel’s rebellion was caused by unbelief and lack of faith!

Please bear in mind that the Book of Hebrews is written to Jewish converts to Christianity - they were born again believers, many of whom were contemplating going back to Judaism (The Law) because of the persecution they were subject to by those outside The Faith, Christianity - faith in Christ Jesus! This chapter explains how better off we are if we hold to our faith in Jesus and not turn back to our old life and ways of sin!

Note: In the body on this article the verses from Hebrews are in italics, the explanation of the verse/s follows in straight text with additional scriptures shown in bold italics.

The Son Was Faithful
1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,

The writer starts this chapter with the word “therefore” which means because of what we have been told in the previous chapter, we need to consider our “Apostle and High Priest, Jesus Christ!”

Now, what is meant by the word "consider" in verse 1?

"Consider" in the original Greek text is a transliteration of the Greek word "katanoeó (Strong's 2657)" pronounced "kat-an-o-eh'-o."

Its expanded meaning is: behold, consider, discover, perceive, notice, contemplated, detected, look more closely at.

Here the writer is encouraging us to carefully examine the faithfulness of Christ to the Father and absorb this very same faithfulness into our lives as born again believers, children of God in Christ Jesus! Our faithfulness should fully reflect that of our Saviour's!

2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house.

Jesus never changes, He is the same yesterday, today and always. Just as He is faithful to the Father so He will always be faithful to us. We must always endeavour to be the same to Him and to our brothers and sisters in Christ! Live life in the Spirit as He did!

Hebrews 13:8 (AMP)
Jesus Christ is [eternally changeless, always] the same yesterday and today and forever.

3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house.

In verse 3 we learn that even though Moses was touched (by the glory of God which was physically seen by the Israelites on his face. This was only a reflection of God's glory whereas Jesus is God's glory! Everything was created in Him (Jesus), through Him and for Him!

Exodus 34:29-30 (AMP)
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hand, he did not know that the skin of his face was shining [with a unique radiance] because he had been speaking with God. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to approach him.

Hebrews 1:3 (AMP)
The Son is the radiance and only expression of the glory of [our awesome] God [reflecting God’s Shekinah glory, the Light-being, the brilliant light of the divine], and the exact representation and perfect imprint of His [Father’s] essence, and upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal]. When He [Himself and no other] had [by offering Himself on the cross as a sacrifice for sin] accomplished purification from sins and established our freedom from guilt, He sat down [revealing His completed work] at the right hand of the Majesty on high [revealing His Divine authority],

Colossians 1:15-18 (NKJV)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or [e]principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God.

Verse 4 is a reminder of the sovereignty of God over all things. He is the master builder who builds all things and provides all things!

5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward,

Verse 5: According to Jewish teaching and tradition of the times, before the arrival of Jesus Christ the Messiah, the old Rabbis considered Moses to be the greatest and most faithful man ever, even greater than the angels.

The writer of Hebrews teaches the Jews that Moses, even though he was a great and faithful servant of God, was nothing compared to Jesus, the Son of God, that is God in the flesh! The life of Moses served as a testimony of the greatness of the one who was to come - Jesus!

6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

In verse 6 we are told that Jesus is the head of the Church (Son over His own house) and that we, as born again Christians, and here is the rub, a subtle proviso and warning, if we remain in Christ Jesus and hold firm in our faith until the end! We cannot abandon our faith in Christ Jesus and return to sin and and once again take on an unrepentant heart. If we do this we remove ourselves from God's household, His Church.

For the Jews of the time this meant turning back to the Law, the law of sin and death, being apart from Christ Jesus!

We have to remain in Christ Jesus and not abandon our faith in Him alone and return to our unsaved state of unrepentant sin! If we remain in Him, He will remain in us! Apart from Him we are nothing!

John 15:5-6 (AMP)
5 I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken off] branch, and withers and dies; and they gather such branches and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

In verse 5 above Jesus is addressing His Church as individuals, He says we are the branches. He is not addressing the Church as a whole or we would have said "you are the branch"! As individual members of His Church we carry the responsibility of remaining in the Vine (Jesus) for ourselves or we run the risk of being thrown into the fire and burned! Be reminded of the great falling away - apostasy! Willfully turning our backs on our faith in Christ Jesus and returning to a life of sin.

True commitment to Jesus is demonstrated by living our entire lives in Christ Jesus, not just in an initial burst. We trust that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ, his second coming, if you remain in the Vine!

Philippians 1:6 (AMP)
I am convinced and confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will [continue to] perfect and complete it until the day of Christ Jesus [the time of His return].
(But we have to remain in Him to the end we cannot wilfully abandon our faith on Him and live a life of unrepentant sin again. If we do we wilfully remove ourselves from His House, the Church!)

Be Faithful
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
In the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,
And saw My works forty years.
10 Therefore I was angry with that generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they have not known My ways.’
11 So I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”

Verses 7-11 are, apart from the first line, a quote from Psalm 95:7-11.

In the first line the writer makes it clear that the rest of the verses from 7-11 are, as indeed is all scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 1:23 (NKJV)
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV)
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

The writer of Hebrews, because he is addressing Jewish converts to Christianity, uses these five verses as a warning for them not to harden their hearts to the voice and the leading of the Holy Spirit who has drawn them to salvation.

John 3:5 (NKJV)
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

We are warned not to be like the Jews who rebelled against God because of their unbelief and refused to enter the promised land and as a result suffered the consequences of God's anger and none of them were allowed to enter the promised land - His place of rest, and abundant provision!

The actions of the Jews in their refusal to believe in God's promise was considered to be evil and rebellious in His eyes. Rebellion against God in unbelief and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and it is the same for us today if we entertain unbelief in our hearts.

1 Samuel 15:23 (NKJV)
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
He also has rejected you from being king.”

Today, as born again, water baptised and Holy Spirit filled Christians we must listen to and be obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit because He will guide us in all truth.

Romans 8:12-14 (NKJV)
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

John 16:13-15 (NKJV)
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

In verse 12 we are told not to entertain any unbelief in our hearts, we have to fully trust in Jesus for all things. When we entertain unbelief in our hearts, God considers it to be an evil heart! When we have unbelief in our hearts we move away from God!

13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Verse 13 tells us as born again Christians how we should behave towards each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. We are told to encourage one another every day and if we don't we run the risk od developing hardened hearts through the deceitfulness of sin. Entertaining unbelief in our hearts is sin! Encouraging each other daily in our faith should be a lifelong practice in a born again Christian not just a now and again or when I feel like it thing!

No sin is hidden from God so don't think that you can hide the sinful things you do, but openly confess them and repent of them!

Hebrews 4:13 (NKJV)
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end,

In verse 14 lets examine the phrase "partakers of Christ" in order to gain a fuller understanding of its meaning.

The word "partaker" here is a transliteration of the Greek word "metochos" (pronounced MEH-toh-khos). Strong's 3353.

Its expanded meaning is: fellow partaker or partner, a companion of, a sharer with or an associate of.

So, when we are born again we become partakers of all the Christ has from the Father. Paul says that we become "co-heirs" with Christ in all that God has for Jesus!

Romans 8:16-17 (NKJV)
16 The Spirit Himself testifies and confirms together with our spirit [assuring us] that we [believers] are children of God. 17 And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory.

We gain all these things in Christ Jesus if we hold on to Jesus (the beginning of our confidence) until the end. We mustn't fall away from or abandon our faith in Christ Jesus! We must remain in the vine!

15 while it is said:
“Today, if you will hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Verse 15 warns us again not to harden our hearts and abandon the faith! Live life in the Spirit!

Galatians 5:16-17 (NKJV)
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Failure of the Wilderness Wanderers
16 For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?

In verse 16 the writer uses the analogy of the "Wilderness Wanderers" to encourage us not to give up on our belief and faith in Christ Jesus. The Israelites after hearing from God through Moses left the slavery of Egypt and headed for God's promised land.

They started of well by believing the Word of God through Moses but then, when the struggles of life caught up with them, they lapsed into unbelief which led to the sin of rebellion and they refused to enter the promised land through fear of those "giants" who were already living there. They refused to believe that God would give them victory over the enemy and as a result they wandered in the desert for 40 years and none of that generation entered the promised land!

Dear brothers and sisters let's not do the same as the "Wilderness Wanderers", after starting of well then allowing unbelief to enter our hearts through the trials of life and the lies of the Devil and then turning our backs on Jesus and willfully denying Him.

We must remain in the "vine - Jesus" and work out our salvation with fear and trembling! We must be obedient to the Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit - we must be doers of the Word and not just readers!

Philippians 2:12-13 (AMP)
12 So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]. 13 For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure.

To find out more about "working out your salvation with fear and trembling", please read my article on the below link:

17 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

In verses 17-19 the writer exposes us to a characteristic of God that we tend to ignore, His anger. God's anger, unlike frail humanity, is always righteous and just - never unfair. We can always safely say that His anger is brought about by man's willful disobedience to His Word!

Because of their unbelief, the Israelites were not allowed to enter His rest! Their great failure was to not persevere in faith and thus be able to enter the promised land, God's place of rest for them.

The writer was reminding the Jews at the time, and us today, to keep our faith in Christ Jesus who is the assurance of our salvation. This is a warning for us not to turn our backs on Jesus in unbelief or we run the risk of not entering into His rest just as the Israelites did and perished in the wilderness!

Jesus reminded us in the parable of the sower that some of us will depart from the faith for various reasons.

It is wonderful to make a good start by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour (repentance from our sins), but making a good start is only the beginning of our Christian walk, we must persevere in our faith and not walk away from it, we must remain in the vine and work out our salvation with fear and trembling.

Matthew 13:3-9 (NKJV)
3 Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. 6 But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. 8 But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Life application for today’s believers
1.We must not neglect our salvation but work it out in fear and trembling until our day of redemption is here.

Luke 21:28 (NKJV)
Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

The above verse encourages us not to be overwhelmed with the challenges of life that we all face. Life and the Devil will often throw curved balls at us in many forms of uncertainty and fear. These at times can become very oppressive and depressing but Jesus reminds us that when we stand firm in our faith and keep our eyes on Him, our redemption is secure! Our faith in Christ Jesus alone is our hope and salvation.

2.Remember that Jesus is supreme over all things.
3.We must live in accordance with God’s will and not our own.
4.Jesus alone is worthy of glory, honour and praise.
5.We must abide in Jesus and not drift away from our faith and return to our old ways!

Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven
Thank you for Jesus my Lord and Saviour. Thank you that it is by His name alone that I am saved, and it is only through Him that I receive your sonship and can share in your spiritual blessings that are for Your children only. Help me, Father by the power of your Holy Spirit to walk in a manner that is worthy of my salvation in Christ Jesus and keep me from developing a sinful, rebellious heart of unbelief. Help me in my unbelief I pray!. Amen.

To Jesus belongs all glory, honour and praise!

Jesus the Name above all names!
